The Basic Nursing Assistance program offers the study of the principles, rationale, philosophy and procedures used by the nurse assistant in long term care, home health settings and hospitals. Content focus is on basic human needs and care of the elderly. Integration of skills and concepts is acquired through hands-on clinical experience at local health care facilities. The course prepares student to provide basic personal care under the supervision of licensed nurses. It includes a minimum of 80 hours of theory and laboratory training and an additional 40 hours minimum of clinical experience in a local health care facility including hospitals and/or nursing homes. Course completers are qualified to write the state exam to qualify to be listed on the registry as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Employment opportunities for CNAs primarily include hospitals; home care and long term care facilities.

Admission Requirements and Prerequisites
- The student must be 16 years old or older with proof.
- Complete an application and pay the registration fee of $50.
- No healthcare or medical office work experience is required.
- Complete a general physical exam (application at school), documentation of recent two-step TB skin test, proof of PPD, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Rubella/Measles vaccine, Hepatitis B vaccine. Students are responsible for all costs associated with meeting these requirements Immunizations costs will depend on individual needs and can be acquired at public health clinics, medical clinics, or private physician’s offices. This requirement must be completed prior to the start of clinicals and forms will be distributed during the first week of classes.
- All health professions students will be required to submit to a criminal background check. The required Criminal Background Check will be initiated by KAMITH with the Illinois State Police at the beginning of the training in compliance with the Health Care Worker Background Check Act. Applicants with Disqualifying Felony Convictions are discouraged from continuing with the program until they get a Waiver from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Please do not do the criminal background check prior to being instructed to do so. The instructions will be given out during the first week of classes.
